Former Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell believes that Liverpool are yet to overcome the loss of Xabi Alonso moving to Real Madrid last summer.

Following the transfer, Alberto Aquilani was brought in from Roma to bolster the Reds, but the shadow of pass-master Alonso has hung over Anfield with neither the Italian, nor Lucas, having been able to create as much as the Spaniard did during his days in front of the Kop.

A difficult season, with average performances in the Premier League coupled with early exits from the Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup, has raised doubts about whether the most successful team in England can finish fourth and secure a spot among Europe's elite next term.

The most recent set-back - a 1-0 loss to Wigan on Monday - only served to add more fuel to the fire of the Merseyside club's naysayers.

"Steven Gerrard was gutted when Alonso was sold to Madrid," Jewell told The Daily Mail.

"He knows he's a better player with Alonso in the team.

"When he got the ball the first player Alonso would look for is Gerrard and it's significant Liverpool aren't scoring as many goals as they have in the last few seasons."

The Basque, who a year earlier had been used as a bargaining chip by manager Rafa Benitez in his ultimately fruitless pursuit of Gareth Barry, then of Aston Villa, was eventually sold to the Spanish giants for a fee believed to be in the region of £30 million.
