Despite Sunderland's dismal form and consequent slide down the Premier League, manager Steve Bruce can rest assured he has the backing of chairman Niall Quinn.

Bruce's team flirted around the European places in September but the Black Cats have quickly fallen from grace and now find themselves hovering just three points above the Premier League's relegation zone.

With no win in their last 14-matches, some sections of the Stadium of Light have already run out of patience with Bruce but Quinn insists the former Manchester United player is under no pressure.

“I'm the first person to realise the fans haven't had a lot to cheer about,” Quinn told the club's official site.

“Steve Bruce has only been here [Sunderland] nine months and it takes a while for a team to settle in.

“But we're really happy that we have the spine of a side that can consistently get into that top 10.”

Sunderland have a dire record away from Wearside, losing 10 times and with only one solitary victory on their excursions all season.

It's meant that results on home soil have become imperative to ensuring their top-flight survival. Sunderland face fellow strugglers Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday evening, before hosting Manchester City and Birmingham City.
