Andrey Arshavin Insists Arsenal Must Beat Liverpool To Keep Title Hopes Alive
Forward believes season could hinge on result against Reds...
By Adrian Fisk
Andrey Arshavin believes his Arsenal side must take all three points against Liverpool on Wednesday night if they are to have any hope of being crowned Premier League champions this season.
With Arsenal having succumbed 3-1 and 2-0 to Manchester United and Chelsea respectively, Arshavin is adamant that only a victory against a resurging Liverpool can put the Gunners' title aspirations back on track.
"In football, anything can happen. Stumbles, such as Chelsea losing to Everton, are quite possible. Then there is Chelsea's match against Manchester United [in April] when at least one rival has to drop points," said the Russian, as quoted by Mail Online.
"For us, the main thing is to win our matches. The next one against Liverpool will be key. If we win, we have the chance to make up ground on the leaders and think about the title race.
"If, however, we continue our run of failure, we have to think about how we preserve what we have already got."
Talking about Arsenal’s defeat to Chelsea, Arshavin highlighted the pivotal role played by Didier Drogba.
"We didn't stop him and he made the result," he added.
"This is one of the reasons for the defeat. We were unable to cope with Drogba."
