Manchester City confirmed the signing of winger Adam Johnson from Middlesbrough for an undisclosed fee as the transfer window slammed shut.

The former England Under-21 international has signed a deal which lasts until June 2014, but the protracted transfer was the most closely-followed during Monday.

City gaffer Roberto Mancini was pleased to have snapped up the 22-year-old, who will wear the number 11 shirt at Eastlands, vacated by Brazil-bound Robinho

"We are delighted that Adam has chosen to come here," the Italian told his club's official website.

"He is a very good player with fantastic potential, and as a club we are always keen to sign British talent."

Johnson appeared 96 times for Boro, netting 13 goals. He made his debut as a 17-year-old against Sporting Lisbon in a UEFA Cup tie.

He goes straight into Mancini's squad for the weekend game against Hull City.
