Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is to be given £75 million to spend on new players by the club's owners, according to a report from The Daily Mirror.

The Glazer family have apparently borrowed the money and will hand it to the United boss in the hope that further on-field success will encourage investors to purchase some of the £500m worth of bonds, the issue of which was announced yesterday.

The Americans reportedly believe that investment in the team is the way to eventually reduce the level of debt at Old Trafford.

Financial figures released yesterday revealed that the Red Devils would have made a loss last year without the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid.

The debt burden with which the club is saddled continues to be a major concern to supporters at United, with some supporters' groups arguing that now is the time for the Glazer family to leave the club.
