Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has declared that he would be disappointed if young Spanish starlet Fran Merida has made arrangements to leave the club at the end of the season.

The 19-year-old midfielder joined the Gunners in 2005 from Barcelona's youth setup but is now reportedly keen on a move away from the Emirates in search of first team football.

Merida, who has been compared to club captain Cesc Fabregas, has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid at various stages this season and recent reports suggest that a deal has already been done, something Wenger is fearful of.

"I fear the worst, but I know nothing, that's the truth," he is quoted as saying by AS.

"Fran is in a phase of his career where he wants play and where he needs to play. I do not know if he has signed with another team or not, but the truth is that if he did I would be disappointed."

Merida's contract with the North London club is set to expire on June 30, but Wenger is hopeful he will continue as an Arsenal player beyond this season.

"We are trying to keep him with us, but for different reasons we have never been able to reach an agreement," he added.
