With the League Cup just a month away from its conclusion - the semi-final stage gets underway on Tuesday evening - Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has begun to express excitement about the prospect of reaching the final and winning the competition outright.

O'Neill and his Villans travel to Ewood Park to take on Blackburn Rovers in the opening leg of their semi-final tussle tonight, three days after defeating Sam Allardyce's men 3-1 in the FA Cup.

The former Celtic boss has great experience in England's tertiary competition, having lifted the trophy aloft twice as a player with Nottingham Forest, and twice as a manager with Leicester City.

"For a football club of this standing, it would be fantastic to win it," O'Neill exclaimed in The Sun. "We should be contesting more semi-finals - and finals if it's at all possible.

"In terms of it being essential to win, the club will survive without winning but it'd still be very good.

"The winning of trophies gives a football club renewed status and a confidence to go and compete again."

Blackburn, who eliminated Chelsea at the quarter-final stage to book their final four date with Aston Villa, will be looking to upset O'Neill's quest to win the competition, and midfielder David Dunn believes the Lancastrians can get the better of their Midland counterparts over two-legs.

He recently said: "Over two legs, it is going to be difficult but we feel if we play well, we've got a chance of getting through."
