Wayne Rooney was a relieved man after inspiring Manchester United to a 3-1 victory over Hull City.

The Manchester United striker gave the ball away for the home side's equaliser but had scored before setting up Dimitar Berbatov for United’s third.

“Obviously when they got the equaliser it was from a mistake by myself,” he told Sky Sports.

“Thankfully we got the win as I don’t think the manager would’ve been too pleased [if we hadn’t].

“It wasn’t a nice feeling, I’m just glad we got the win at the end.”

Rooney was pleased with United’s performance in an important match for them.

“We knew it was a big game for us today,” he added.

“I thought near the end we counter attacked with some good breaks and thankfully we got the two goals at the end.”

The victory sees United close the gap on Chelsea to just two points, and Rooney is hoping for another league title at the end of the season.

He continued: “It’s a mad league.

“There are a lot of teams dropping points.

“It’s really close, hopefully we’ll be more consistent in the second half [of the season] and retain our title.”
