United stumble past plucky Hull

HULL CITY

Boaz Myhill - 6 - Mixed the sublime with the ridiculous. Denied Rooney in fabulous fashion, only to comedically mis-hit a clearance a few minutes later.

Bernard Mendy
- 6 - Stuck to his task of closing down Giggs well and also held back to deny Evra space to rampage into.

Anthony Gardner - 7 - Used his enormous size to walk all over Berbatov. His team-mates dire dead ball deliveries failed to take advantage of his height when he strode forward.

Kamil Zayatte - 6 - Stretched his legs to track back and deny Valencia and Rooney.

Andy Dawson - 5 - Slow to react to Fletcher's bouncing cross that led to Rooney's opener and unlucky to notch an own goal from Rooney's unplayable pass.

Richard Garcia - 7 - Not many players walk off the pitch knowing they have got the better of Evra, but the Australian could hold his head up high. Should have won a penalty when Brown chopped him down in the box as he veered inside. Taken off for Hesselink.

George Boateng - 6 - Got in the face of the United midfield and harried Rooney when he got on the ball. Substituted for Geovanni.

Seyi Olofinjana
- 6 - Drove on from the middle of the pitch, stinging Kuszczak's fingertips in the process. Delicate pass played in Hunt.

Stephen Hunt - 5 - Hustled and harried Rafael, but could not fluster the young Brazilian. Fluffed a chance when played in by Olofinjana.

Jozy Altidore - 8 - Brought out the worst in United's centre backs, drawing a succession of fouls when they tried to take him on at the physical game. Excellent snapshot on the edge of the box drew save from Kuszczak on the stretch. Made way for Ghilas.

Craig Fagan - 7 - Pounced on Rooney's back pass to put in the cross that led to the penalty. Kept his cool to fire home from 12 yards.

Substitutes

Geovanni - n/a

Ghilas - n/a

Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink - 6 - Huge frame provided a target when he came on.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Tomas Kuszczak - 7 - Great advert again for the Pole's ability. Made a number of saves and was rarely troubled in possession.

Rafael da Silva - 6 - Lit up the match with his runs from deep and almost got on the score sheet on a foray forward. Showed inexperience, though, when nudging Altidore in the back for Hull's penalty. Booked.

Nemanja Vidic - 5 - Got in to an unnecessary barging match with Altidore which saw him penalised for a number of fouls.

Wes Brown - 5 - Troubled by Altidore and extremely fortunate to not give away a penalty in the first half after a wayward lunge on Garcia.

Patrice Evra - 4 - Struggled to defend, poor in possession and lucky to not pick up a second booking.

Antonio Valencia - 4 - Abysmal performance from the Ecuadorian. Every cross hit the first defender in the few occasions he actually got involved in the match. Put out of his misery when withdrawn for Park.

Michael Carrick - 5 - Meandered across the pitch, barely registering an influence on proceedings.

Darren Fletcher - 7 - Picked out a tremendous cross to set United on their way and was his usual energetic self upon return to midfield.

Ryan Giggs - 6 - Probed the Hull defence with his usual deft array of passes, but was a guilty party to his team's inability to hold on to the ball.

Dimitar Berbatov - 6 - Slotted in the goal when played in by Rooney, but was far too sloppy in possession otherwise.

Wayne Rooney - 8.5 - What a bizarre match. Scored the opener, then gave away the advantage with a brainless back pass. Made up for this indiscretion to force the own goal that got United in front, then supplied Berbatov with the easiest of chances.

Substitutes

Ji-Sung Park - 7 - Improved vastly on Valencia's contribution. Was waiting to score before Dawson put the ball in to his own net.

Gabriel Obertan - 5 - Little involvement other than a wayward cross.
