Roberto Mancini: Manchester City Only Contacted Me After The Tottenham Hotspur Defeat

No conspiracy to oust Sparky it seems...

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has insisted that he only learned that the Premier League outfit intended to appoint him as manager after the club's recent defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Press reports have today claimed that the appointment of the Italian was the culmination of a lengthy process that involved much negotiation whilst Hughes was still in post at Eastlands.

The Italian also asserted that he was keen to repeat the kind of success he enjoyed during his time in charge at Italian giants Inter, where he won three domestic league titles.

"They called me the day after Tottenham Hotspur game – not before," he told reporters at a press conference today.

"My job is a manager. I stayed in Inter Milan for four years and won seven trophies and at the end of the season they sacked me. I don’t want to look back.”

"I am sorry for Mark [Hughes].

"I believe in my position, I think that I can do a good job because we have good players. My squad usually plays to win, always.

"My target is to arrive in the top four. I think it’s possible."

Some reports have claimed today that Mancini is little more than a caretaker boss, keeping the Eastlands hot seat warm for a higher profile coach.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has been rumoured to be the ultimate management target for City's board, but Mancini does not think he's facing the axe.

"No [I don’t think I will be sacked If I don’t make the Champions League] I hope to stay for many years," he asserted.

"I don’t have any problem with the players. The training is good. I hope that when I go away in ten years, the players have the same situation as with Mark.

"If you stay in Inter, the pressure is OK. The pressure is no problem.

"I want to see this week the players and after we make a decision [on January signings].

"My target to work every day to improve the squad, only this.”

"I played in the Premier League with Leicester [City]. I think that the football is the same in the world.

"I am brought to stay here because City is a big club, with the Arab royal family I said thank you for this job and I think that I want to stay here for many years and I want to contribute to win many trophies as I think City have great supporters and I hope we do a good job for them.

“I think that together we arrive to win something. My contract is six months, plus three years."

Mancini also revealed that former City gaffer Sven-Goran Eriksson had called him to congratulate him on his appointment.

“Sven called me yesterday and was very happy for me. Sven said Manchester City was a fantastic club," he continued.

“No [job wasn’t talked about] we just spoke about football in general.

“He want to know football in general and Manchester on me.

"After the Inter [job] I have turned down four proposals but I prefer to wait because I wanted to go to England and the Premier League."

Mancini also felt that his squad was good enough to challenge neighbours Manchester United.

“This City is the same as Milan [with regards to the United and City rivalry]. Sir Alex is a big manager but we want to beat him," he explained.

"I think that the supporters are fantastic. I think that I can do a good job.

“When I played I played in attack, always. For me it’s the most important. When your team plays well, in the end you win, always. I want to win always. At home, away, in training ground, always.”

“Robinho is a fantastic player. I hope that to have many players at the same level as Robinho. This player Robinho, Carlos Tevez. I think that I have five or six strikers that are very good.

“It’s normal for me [the controversy surrounding his appointment] but in 10 minutes we finish and after no problem. Tomorrow another day and we can work well.”

“We have other problems with injuries but captain not a problem at the moment. I have a lot of important, international players. For now, Kolo Toure is captain.

“In Italy, the manager decides with the director of football. For me that’s okay. We speak with Garry [Cook, chief executive, Brian [Kidd, assistant manager] and together we decided

“Now is important that we concentrate on Saturday’s match against Stoke. This week we must work well. Today the players work very, very well. This is most important in this moment.

“For one big player, it is important to make the history of the club. Robinho can make history for Manchester City. I played at Sampdoria for 15 years and I made history. I think that Robinho can stay here.

“My target is top four. Next season we want to win the Premier League.

“I know very well the players. They are international players. Only one problem at the moment - injuries.

“I think that Shay Given will take the ball always.

“I stayed at Inter for four years, I won seven trophies. I love Italian football but for me now, this is an important experience. I am very happy for this job."
