Roberto Mancini has today affirmed his pride in being appointed manager at Manchester City.

The Italian was appointed at the weekend following the dismissal from the club of Mark Hughes, and he is optimistic that he can replicate the league title-winning success he enjoyed whilst coach at Milan giants Inter.

"I hope history repeats itself," he told his new club's official website.

“I am proud to get the job because City is a good club with good players. Manchester is similar to Milan in its football passion."

Mancini is also relishing the tussle for local supremacy with Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United, against whom the Citizens have a League Cup semi-final lined up in the New Year.

"In Milan there are two big teams there fighting for supremacy and silverware and here it is the same. I like the challenge of that," he added.

"I know how fans feel about such matches and I thank those City fans who came to greet me at the hotel.  I know their passion and I know that it helps the team."

And Mancini also stated that he was very pleased to have former United number two Brian Kidd as his assistant at Eastlands.

"I know Brian, he is a boss in English football," he said.

"I know his record as a top player for City, Everton and United. He was a striker, I was a striker; we share the same football philosophy.

"He has also has great coaching experience. I am sure we will gel very well."
