Arsenal Midfielder Abou Diaby Is 'Very Different' From Patrick Vieira - Arsene Wenger

Comparisons with Gunners' legend perhaps a little wide of mark...

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has reacted to claims that Abou Diaby is becoming 'the new Patrick Vieira' at the Emirates by asserting that the two players are very different.

Wenger feels that Diaby, who is as yet a long way off attaining Vieira's stature as a Gunners legend, is a much more attack-minded player than his fellow countryman.

"He is more of an offensive player. He is not a defensive-minded player and he's not a holding player," the manager told his club's official website.

"He's a player who crosses the field at ease, goes from box to box like it's no distance and has good power as well.

"I believe Vieira was more of a passer of the ball. Diaby is more of a dribbler, more offensive and makes more penetrating runs. Vieira was more of a constructor. They have a similar elegance and type of play but are not completely comparable."

Injury has prevented Diaby from really establishing himself fully in the Gunners' set-up in the four years since his move from Auxerre.

Wenger affirms that a lengthy injury-free run could well be the making of Diaby in terms of his Arsenal career, particularly as the player has such a tremendous work ethic.

"He had a good sequence of games before he got injured," the coach added.

"Sometimes he gets strange injuries but had a good week of training last week, he looked strong and is now becoming a very promising player for us.

"I must say that he is a fantastic player to coach as well. Every day you can tell him 'do that, that and that and then you can go home'. He will always do it and he will do more.

"What has been frustrating for him at times is that he works very hard in training and then gets injured."
