Manchester City Offered Guus Hiddink Manager's Job Ahead Of Roberto Mancini - Report

Roberto Mancini may have been appointed as Manchester City manager at the weekend but it seems that he was not first choice to replace Mark Hughes in the Eastlands hotseat.

The Daily Telegraph claims that City chief executive Garry Cook flew to Amsterdam's Schipol airport to meet Hiddink's agent Cees Van Nieuwenhuizen at the beginning of December to offer him the job as an immediate replacement for Hughes.

It is also reported that Cook had readied a private jet so that the Dutch coach could fly directly to Abu Dhabi to meet City owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan to conclude the deal.

Hiddink turned the offer down as he felt it was disrespectful to Hughes to negotiate whilst the Welshman was still in a job. He is believed to be on the verge of signing a two-year contract extension in his job as Russian national team coach.

Meanwhile, The Telegraph also claims that City have been using Mancini and AC Milan midfielder Clarence Seedorf as an unofficial sounding board for their transfer dealings since the Abu Dhabi Group takeover in August 2008. Mancini is believed to have recommended Emmanuel Adebayor whilst Seedorf highlighted Nigel de Jong.

Mark Hughes is also said to blame Cook for the failures to sign Kaka and Samuel Eto'o, with both deals apparently being 'frozen out' at the last minute.
