Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger remains calm over the future of William Gallas despite the imminent expiry of the French defender's contract.

Gallas' current deal runs out in June, 2010, and Wenger has claimed that talks will now begin over sealing an extension, indicating that the player's experience is vital to the club's dressing-room.

"The talks with Gallas have to be a bit earlier because he plays regularly," Wenger explained to Sky Sports.

"We need some experience in the dressing-room."

The declaration that experience is a fundamental commodity at Ashburton Grove has also sparked a flurry of transfer speculation in the press.

Former Manchester United goal-poacher Ruud van Nistelrooy is struggling for games at Real Madrid, and The Daily Mirror have linked the Dutchman with an Arsenal transfer.

Meanwhile, The News of the World recently claimed that Van Nistelrooy's club and country team-mate Rafael van der Vaart is also on Wenger's wish-list.
