Spain And Real Madrid Set Sights On Aston Villa Defender Carlos Cuellar - Report

The Mirror reports that both the Spanish national team and Real Madrid are keeping a close eye on Carlos Cuellar, the in-form Aston Villa defender.

Los Merengues find themselves one man short at the back after their star centre-half, Pepe, ruptured his anterior cruciate ligaments in last weekend's clash with Valencia.

The Portugal regular is expected to sit out the next six months, and so club president Florentino Perez is reportedly willing to splash out on the Villans' versatile stopper in January.

Such a move would highlight a remarkable turn in fortunes for Cuellar, whose suitability to the Premier League was seriously questioned after an indifferent debut season.

However, the 28-year-old has answered his critics this term and is now showing to sort of quality that won him the SFWA Footballer of the Year award during his time at Rangers.

As a result, it is claimed, Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has had his scouts monitor the former Osasuna man's progress in recent weeks, and he could be in the frame for the 2010 World Cup.
