Thomas Vermaelen Loves Playing For Arsenal Due To Arsene Wenger's 'Vision'

Arsenal's only summer signing so far, Thomas Vermaelen takes a break during his debut against Barnet
Arsenal's 2-1 weekend win over Liverpool helped silence the vocal critics following the heavy losses to Chelsea and Manchester City, and defender Thomas Vermaelen has revealed that Arsene Wenger never lost the confidence of the dressing-room as the young team share his vision of maintaining an aesthetically-pleasing brand of football.

Vermaelen, 24, a summer signing from Ajax, has slotted seamlessly into Arsenal's defensive set-up, and has emerged as a fans' favourite with large sections of the crowd cooing his new nickname "Verminator"; a moniker the player claims he is not averse to.

"I don't mind if people call me The Verminator, because if they think I can help toughen the team up when needed, good. I think I can do that," he explained to the club's official website.

"The main reason I like playing for Arsenal is the vision of the boss, the way he wants us to play.

"I believe we can win trophies playing this way. What is the vision? The vision is basically for a young team who all share the same philosophy to play good football, to grow and eventually win a big trophy.

"I know there are many critics who say that playing a certain way then good things can't happen but maybe they should just think for a while and look at how a team like Barcelona has grown and how they play. Look around at their side. They don't have many strong players but they have been winning big trophies."

Arsenal have moved to just six points shy of league leaders Chelsea, and have the added advantage of a game in hand. They play Burnley on Wednesday evening.
