Manchester City have confirmed that midfielder Michael Johnson could miss the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury in training.

Johnson, who was returning from a long-term abdominal injury that kept him out for over a year, could be facing another long-term spell on the sidelines.

The England Under-21 midfielder had returned to the City first team fold in recent weeks, and notched his first goal of the season during the club's League Cup defeat of Scunthorpe.

But after suffering the injury in training, Johnson will now learn the full extent of the injury over the next few days.

City manager Mark Hughes was full of sympathy for the midfielder and told the club's official website: "We are all disappointed for Michael, who has worked so hard to get back into first team contention and shown everyone what a good player he is.

"Unfortunately he might be out for the season but he will receive the best possible care and attention."
