Hull City midfielder Jimmy Bullard has been ruled out of action for as much as eight weeks, after scans revealed the severity of the knee injury which forced him off in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa.

Bullard, who departed the pitch in tears, will be unavailable until January and has not suffered a recurrence of knee injury that had kept him out of the game for over eight months.

The midfielder underwent a scan on Monday to determine the extent of his injury.

"I am sitting here like a man waiting in the emergency room for his wife to give birth," boss Phil Brown told Sky Sports News.

"It's been a horrendous day for me but I'm now very hopeful Jimmy will be back on the field of play before the transfer window closes.

"That's what I and Jimmy will be looking at. Hopefully we'll have him for three to four months of the season still."

Bullard has been an integral part of Hull's recent upturn in form, and his enthusiasm and work rate has not gone unnoticed with the player earning the Premier League player of the month award for November.

"He's a tremendous character, the way he is he just wants the ball and to please people," Brown said.

"He's that kind of character, there are not so many about."
