Ashley Cole Praises Chelsea's Defence

Left-back highlights the importance of clean sheets...

Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole has praised his team’s recent defensive displays and admitted that clean sheets have helped build confidence.

The Blues have the best back-line in the Premier League thus far this season, having only conceded eight goals in fourteen games.

Cole played a key role in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday, and the England international believes that solid defending is the key to success, particularly in the so-called 'bigger games.'

"In the big games we defend well. We know we will get a chance and score because these guys [the forwards] are on form at the minute," he told the Evening Standard.

"Teams like Arsenal are going to get chances but we defended well as a team from up front with Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka and Joe Cole working hard.

"If we keep clean sheets then we know we will win games. That's what matters in the big matches and if you want to win the league you have to beat these kinds of teams and so far it is going well."

Chelsea had previously enjoyed limited success against the top four teams last season, something Cole is pleased his side has rectified this time around.

"Last year we didn't beat the top four sides and that cost us but so far so good. We have won these games," he added.
