Tottenham Hotspur Can Finish Fourth This Season - Edgar Davids

Dutch legend hopeful for former club…

Edgar Davids (Red Bull)

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Edgar Davids believes that Spurs are finally on course to breaking into the top four in the Premier League, which means the coveted prize of a place in the Champions League.

The 36-year-old was involved in the north London club's bid for fourth spot in 2006, but the squad was hit with a mystery virus before the the final game of the season, and so local rivals Arsenal took the qualifying spot instead.

Following the 9-1 thrashing dealt out to Wigan Athletic at White Hart Lane on Sunday, Davids hopes the squad can hold on to the spot that they currently occupy.

The former Netherlands international is quoted by the Press Association as saying: "We are always rooting for that and I hope for them that they finally get the fourth spot.

"I think it's going to be a hard and long run and will be decided in the final games.

"I just hope that it isn't the last game, like when I was there.

He added: "I was back at the training ground recently and [manager] Harry [Redknapp] was really relaxed and very nice. He didn't invite me back but when I am in London I go back to say 'hi' to the boys and check up on them."

Although the club missed out on a chance to compete in the Champions League, Davids believes that the objectives were fulfilled when they qualified for the UEFA Cup.

He continued: "I liked that whole time there and I don't see a loss, just because we finished fifth.

"When they signed me they had one objective - European football. I delivered.

"They said European football and didn't even dream of Champions League but when you get close you want to take it on. It was the first time they qualified for Europe in years."
