Bolton Wanderers manager Gary Megson feels the Republic of Ireland's failure to qualify for the World Cup was as much due to the governing body’s seeding of teams as it was the hand of Thierry Henry.
Many had expected the 1998 world champions to qualify automatically but they came second to Serbia before being placed among the top seeds in the play-offs, avoiding the likes of Portugal, Greece and Russia, the latter being the only top seed to lose their play-off.
Megson believes that gave France a great second chance after a disappointing campaign.
"I think that is a little bit out of order. With all due respect, France have made a bit of a mess of it, not to qualify outright,” he’s quoted as saying by AOL Sport.
“Ireland, though, have been fantastic in what they did.
“Their reward was to be stuck in against another huge team. It was really unfair on them. Perhaps they should have been seeded."
Steering clear of Henry bashing, Megson, like many Premier League managers, also appears to back the use of technology when it comes to judging such big decisions.
He added: "Until we get to a point where everyone can see what the camera sees from all different angels we are going to have to accept it.”
“I am so sorry for Ireland that the goal happened in that manner."
