Sunderland Boss Steve Bruce: Craig Gordon 'Devastated' And Michael Turner For England
Scottish 'keeper crestfallen after injury...
Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has spoken of the blow that has ruled out goalkeeper Craig Gordon for three months, whilst tipping defender Michael Turner for a World Cup spot with England.
Scottish international Gordon, a £9 million Roy Keane signing from Hearts two years ago, had impressed Bruce this term only to suffer a broken arm after a collision with Tottenham's Jermain Defoe a fortnight ago.
"I was absolutely delighted with his form, he was starting to look like the goalkeeper we paid all that money for," Bruce said, as quoted by Press Association Sport.
"Of course he's upset, he's got a broken arm. He's had an operation to have a plate inserted and he's in plaster.
"To have him out for three months is a blow, for sure. He is devastated with what happened but he will get over it."
On whether there was any intent behind Defoe's injury causing challenge, Bruce was non-committal.
"He certainly caught him. Whether he can get out of the road only Jermain Defoe will know that, but he certainly caught him," he added.
Bruce also still appears riled over the suspension of striker Kenwyne Jones, and specifically referee Andre Marriner who after sending off Jones on October 31 only issued Blackburn's Pascal Chimbonda with a yellow card after he appeared to lash out with a punch the following week.
"I've just compiled a DVD of Mr Marriner, who sent off Kenwyne. The same referee, it's unbelievable. He [Chimbonda] gets a yellow card," Bruce continued.
On a more positive note, Bruce spoke of summer signing Michael Turner's World Cup prospects, adding: "There is always somebody that comes from nowhere to make it. I won't be surprised if it is Michael the way he has been playing."
