Rafael Benitez Still Aiming For Premier League Glory; Sheds Light On Liverpool's Gareth Barry And Robbie Keane Debacle

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has admitted that he will be "disappointed" if the Reds fail to win the Premier League this season.

The Anfield outfit have experienced a slump in recent times, as they have only a lone victory and six losses to show for their last nine games in all competitions.

They have slipped to seventh place in the league and are 11 points adrift of leaders Chelsea. But despite the setback, Benitez remains desperate to bring the title to Merseyside.

"Anyone who knows me knows that I want to win every trophy, every game," he is quoted in Sporting Life as saying.

"But if you ask me what I prefer, I will say the Premier League.

"If I do not win the title, I'm sure I'd be so disappointed maybe I would have this feeling [of failure]."

The Reds mounted one of their best title challenges for years last season, but their plans were scuppered due to several draws in games that they would have expected to win.

Benitez believes that the situation may have been very different if current Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry - a long-term target while at Aston Villa - had signed for the club.

And the former Valencia boss even suggested that one of the Kop's more spectacular (and short-lived) flops would have fared far better had the England man joined.

He continued: "You never know. Football is a funny game.

"The plan was for Barry to play on the left and feed the ball to Robbie Keane, who would play up front with Fernando Torres.

"This blueprint had to be scrapped. The collateral damage was Keane, who signed from Tottenham Hotspur before the Barry deal had been done.

"When we wanted to sign Barry, we were sure we were signing a good player with a very good mentality and the quality to play in the Premier League. The priority was Barry, then Keane."
