Time For Javier Mascherano To Repay Liverpool - Ian Rush

Kop hero reckons midfielder must stay committed...

Javier Mascherano - Liverpool
Liverpool legend Ian Rush believes that the time has come for Javier Mascherano to repay the club for showing faith in him during a torrid time in his career.

Mascherano endured a hellish six-month stint at West Ham United before arriving on Merseyside in a loan move that was eventually made permanent.

And Rush believes that the time is ripe for the 25-year-old midfielder to return the favour by lifting his side out of their ongoing malaise.

"The time has now come for Argentina’s captain to back up the faith many have shown in him with a string of top displays for the Reds at this most crucial period," the Welshman said in his column in the Liverpool Echo.

Rush believes that Mascherano has to focus on contributing to the Red cause, rather than looking at a possible move to Barcelona, who are said to be keen on scooping up the former River Plate and Corinthians star.

"I don’t know where the stories are coming from and you tend to find they only emerge when a team is having a bad patch," he said.

"It doesn’t do any good, though, and you must hope it doesn’t prove too unsettling.

"In my view, Barcelona are not a bigger club than Liverpool and he [Mascherano] would do well to remember he was given a chance here when things were going badly for him."
