Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and captain Cesc Fabregas have played down the talk surrounding the club being able to break the 100-goal barrier this season.

The Gunners' 4-1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers took their tally this term to 55 goals in 19 games. They have averaged three goals a game in their past five outings in all competitions.

The last time that a club racked up a tonne in a season was in 1962-63, when Arsenal's arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur hammered in 111 strikes in 42 games - although they finished second to Everton.

Wenger explained that the first priority is to play well and win games.

"I don’t know if it’s possible [to score 100 goals]," the Frenchman is quoted by The Daily Mail as saying.

"What is possible is to continue playing the way we play and even to play better."

Fabregas added: "That’s why you are always cautious in football because it’s a very fragile sport."

The skipper went on to say that the present squad is not chasing history, so as to be compared with the 'Invincibles' of 2003-04. He maintained that their recent victories should go a long way toward steadying the ship when the Gunners experience a lull in the cannonade.

"We don’t look at what the 'Invincibles' achieved, or whatever the name of that team was," Fabregas said.

"We are Arsenal. We are young and trying to do our best. There will come a time when we cannot score. So we just have to keep going."
