The 21-year-old midfielder has been in sensational form this season for the Eagles, and his performances have caught the eye of many of Europe's top-flight clubs.
Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus are all understood to be monitoring Di Maria's progress, as well as weighing up the merits of a January bid for the youngster.
And The Times reports that the Blues met with Benfica chairman, Luis Filipe Vieira, on Thursday, during the Portuguese outfit's Europa League clash at Everton, and presented a first offer of €30 million.
It is believed, however, that Vieira turned down the offer, not only because it falls €10 million short of Di Maria's valuation, but also because he has promised that Benfica will not sell any of their core pieces before the end of the season.
Di Maria, who has a valid contract with Benfica until 2015, has three international caps to his name.
