Sunderland Striker Darren Bent Still Hopeful Of Reaching World Cup
Black Cat hoping his good form will impress England manager...
Darren Bent has admitted that he dreams of making it into Fabio Capello’s England squad for next summer’s World Cup but has claimed that it will be "very difficult".
The former Tottenham Hotspur man has 8 goals in 11 games for his club this season but is still only on the fringes of the international scene.
Speaking to The Sun, the 25-year-old revealed, however, that he had not given up on his dream and was hopeful of impressing the Italian.
"I can't count my chickens," he told the tabloid.
"Every player dreams of playing in a World Cup and I'm no different. But I know it's going to be very difficult to get into the squad.
"I'll never give up trying and hopefully I can do enough to get selected."
The Black Cat is currently the highest scoring Englishman in the Premier League but he acknowledged that even if he ended the season at the top of the goalscoring charts, it may not be enough to guarantee him a place in the squad.
"But, even if I finish the season as the highest scorer in the country, I wouldn't automatically expect to be in the squad," he added.
"Mr Capello has a way of playing and a structure to his team. And if you don't fit, you won't get in.
"All I can do is keep playing well and scoring goals for Sunderland."
