Newcastle United's Alan Smith has welcomed the decision to offer Chris Hughton a permanent contract as manager of the club.

Hughton had previously been leading Newcastle in a caretaker capacity, but after guiding the Magpies to the top of the Championship table has been rewarded with a contract running up until the end of the 2010/11 season.

Former Leeds and Manchester United star Smith, who has been handed the captain's armband in the absence of Nicky Butt, believes that it was a popular decision.

He told the club's official website: "The news was definitely welcomed among the lads. What he's achieved this season has been massive.

"What he's done for the club in taking over the reins in difficult times in the past proves his commitment towards the football club."

He added: "It was difficult again at the start of this season but he has done a brilliant job and the lads are right behind him.

"He's got this opportunity now and it's thoroughly deserved because of everything he's done."
