Sven-Goran Eriksson has declared that Manchester City will win the Premier League in the near future, and that the emergence of his former club meant that it was now a Big Five, not a Big Four.

The Swede expressed his delight at the success of the Eastlands outfit and insisted that it was possible, if unlikely, that they could win the title this season.

“Can they win the league? Of course they can. It would be exceptional if they did, of course," Eriksson said to The Daily Mirror.

“Who knows in football? Maybe. This season, perhaps, winning it would be too good to be true.

“If you want me to put £100 on Manchester City winning the league straight away, well, no I wouldn’t.

“But they will win the league sooner or later.”

The Notts County director of football agreed to a three-year contract with then City owner Thaksin Shinawatra in 2007, but was sacked by the former Thai prime minister after only one year.

Eriksson said that City were well in the mix to finish in the top four.

He added: “I think it’s good for the game that you can now see, quite early on, that we have now five teams who will fight for the Champions League places.

“Now it’s Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool – and City. It’s the top five, not the top four. That’s good for football. I’m very happy for the fans of Manchester City.

“My role as Manchester City manager was different to being manager of clubs in other countries.

“You share responsibility more in other European countries. You have the last word, though, in who to buy and who plays and things like that.

“But you work with a sporting director or a chairman more, on a day-to-day basis, more than I did for Manchester City.”
