Manchester United's Michael Carrick Admits England Career Has Been Disappointing
United midfielder insists he is not "too nice"...
The 28-year-old debuted in 2001 under Sven Goran Eriksson, but despite being a regular first-teamer for both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, has only accumulated 19 caps thus far.
Under Fabio Capello, Carrick has featured five times, but never in a competitive match. His last appearance in a competitive fixture was in the ill-fated 2-0 defeat in Croatia in October 2006.
Having had a slow start to the season for the Red Devils, only starting three games so far, the midfielder is keen to impress for England if given a chance against Ukraine and Belarus, to push for a spot at the World Cup next summer.
“I totally agree I should’ve played more for England," he said, according to The Daily Mirror.
"It’s not enough. For various reasons I should probably have more caps.
“But I don’t really scratch my head about it. Things haven’t worked out with England as much as I would have liked but they happen for a reason.
“Maybe I’ve not played well at the right times or things haven’t fallen for me.
“When I was first left out it was at the stage I got relegated with West Ham and I wasn’t playing very well. That was just down to me, I think. Fair enough, I’ve got no problem with that.
“Getting back in the England squad after I went to Tottenham meant a lot more to me, knowing that I’d gone down to the Championship and come back up, I appreciated how tough it is. That’s how it went for me.
“To get in the England team you have to please the manager and do things he is happy with. It becomes that much tougher because there are not that many games in which you can get the opportunity. When it does come you have to take it.”
Carrick dismissed any notion that he was something of a soft touch, insisting that his track record in big matches for United spoke for itself.
“I’m not too nice for my own good,” he maintained. “I do have the swagger you need.
“Without blowing my own trumpet, you can’t play in Champions League finals and win them or win Premier Leagues and play for Manchester United week-in, week-out, without being able to shoulder the expectations.
“Just because you’re nice, it doesn’t mean you can’t be a top player. That’s what I think. But maybe I’m not quite as nice as I look.”
