Avram Grant Delighted With Return To Portsmouth

Avram Grant has expressed his delight at returning to Portsmouth as director of football, insisting that he was there to assist Paul Hart, not replace him.

The former Chelsea boss, who has had little involvement in football since being sacked 18 months ago by Blues owner Roman Abramovich, returns to his old role at Pompey following club's takeover by Saudi businessman Ali Al-Faraj.

There were strong rumours that Grant was to replace Hart as manager as Al-Faraj was keen on a bigger name to be in charge. However, it appears a healthy compromise has been reached in keeping the popular Hart with the club.

Grant said to The Daily Mirror: “I’m very happy to be back in football.

“Since I left Chelsea I have missed the involvement and it’s great that I can come back to the club where I started in English football, a club I know well and where my Premier League adventure began.

“I have very good memories from my first spell at the club and was delighted to be able to come back to Portsmouth."

The Israeli insisted he was there merely to assist the Hart, alluding to a similar arrangement with former manager Harry Redknapp in his last spell at Pompey.

He said: “I’m very happy to be working with Paul again. I know him well from before.

“Everyone at the club knows how I worked with Harry Redknapp when I was here before and that it will be the same this time round.

“Whatever the club needs me to do, I will do it. I will be there to help him and the club, to help them stay in the Premier League.”
