Everton Could Pay Up To £1.5m For Leeds United Teen Luke Garbutt
Tribunal sets fee that could exceed £1m…
A tribunal has decreed that Everton must pay League One outfit Leeds United £600,000 - which could rise to £1 million - for 16-year-old Luke Garbutt after the player left the Yorkshire club earlier in the summer, having been trained at their academy.
Leeds were due compensation for the manner in which the transfer was conducted, but the two clubs agreed a tribunal could set the fee. The hearing was staged by the Professional Football Negotiating and Consultative Committee, made up of representatives from the various institutions that govern football in England - the Premier League, the Football League, the Professional Footballer's Association, and the Football Assocation.
Garbutt, a dynamic left-back, will be further educated within Everton's youth ranks, and academy manager Ray Hall claimed the transfer was "one for the future".
Hall told the club's official website, "We are all delighted to have Luke - he is an excellent prospect and he will be allowed to mature and learn his trade with our Academy staff and players. This is very much a transfer for the future for Everton.
"It's not an uncommon move to make - many Premier League clubs invest in young talent with a view to nurturing and developing them
"I know the manager [David Moyes] will be keeping an eye on his progress, as he does with all our boys, and if he looks ready to make the next step up then he may get his chance."
The tribunal released a statement indicating they reached the compensation fee when taking into account Garbutt's age, the amount of time he had spent at Leeds, training costs, terms initially offered between the clubs, and if there was any other interest in the player.
