Manchester United Named World's Most Valuable Sports Club

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson may have felt tormented by Real Madrid this summer but he can rest easy in the knowledge that even after selling his most prized asset to the Spanish giants, his club are still a more valuable outfit.

According to Forbes Magazine, Manchester United are the most valuable sports club in the world and topped a table of the 100 most valuable sports teams.

The Red Devils were valued at more than $1.8 billion [£1.1bn], more than £100m ahead of their closest rivals, American Football franchise the Dallas Cowboys.

Real Madrid and Arsenal were the only other association football teams in the top ten, coming in sixth and seventh, respectively.

The top twenty included no fewer than fourteen American Football teams, as US sports franchises dominated a list that included some of the best known names in professional sport.

However, world famous franchise the New York Yankees were the only baseball team to make the top ten.

The Old Trafford outfit topped the top 100 which also included
Liverpool, ranked 18th [£704m], Chelsea, who came 42nd [£558m], Tottenham Hotspur, who were placed 65th [£310m] and Manchester City, who just scraped in to the top 100 [£216m] .

8 - New York Giants - $1.183bn (£724m)
9 - New York Jets - $1.170bn (£716m)
10 - Houston Texans - $1.150bn (£704m)
