Arsenal Boss Arsene Wenger To Return For Saint-Etienne’s Blaise Matuidi

An injury to Francesc Fabregas could accelerate a move for Blaise Matuidi.

A three-week lay-off for Arsenal captain Francesc Fabregas could see Arsene Wenger emerge as an active manager within the transfer market, as the Daily Mail is reporting that the French boss is eager to cement his interest in Saint-Etienne star midfielder Blaise Matuidi.

Even by Wenger's own standards, the current window has been one characterised by inactivity. The sole notable recruit to sign for the Gunners this summer remains £10 million-rated defender Thomas Vermaelen, bought from Ajax.

The Belgian international has taken little time in settling into life at the Emirates Stadium, as he is proving to be an inspired purchase due to his canny break-up play, his penchant for interception, his man-marking and also his heading ability, which seems to belie his size.

Many commentators still think Arsenal require an extra body in midfield, and this is a notion that is even shared by Wenger, who recently intimated that the club are in the market for a player who is of a defensive mindset.

The north London boss, though, did not elaborate as to whether this was a further defender or a defensive midfielder, however, he did claim that ten managers he had spoken to were all in the market for the same type of player.

Sainte sporting director Damien Comolli, who has had ties with Arsenal in the past in a scouting sphere, is adamant that Matuidi is not for sale, but this has not diluted Wenger's interest, who admires the player's likeness to former talisman Patrick Vieira.

Matuidi is rated at €5.7m (£5m).
