Arsenal defender Johan Djourou has been sent back to the Emirates after picking up a knee injury while on international duty.

The naturalised Swiss centre-back was told to return to his club physicians due to inflammation in his left kneecap.

22-year-old Djourou will now have to wait for his 24th Switzerland cap, thus missing out on Wednesday's friendly match against Italy in Basle.

International coach Ottmar Hitzfeld released a statement to the Swiss FA's official website regarding the problem.

"We don't want to take an unnecessary risk shortly before the start of his club's season," the German gaffer said.

At this point it seems as though the African-born player has returned purely as a precautionary measure, but Arsenal are yet to comment on the severity of the injury.
