Arsenal To Ditch Move For Patrick Vieira – Report
A British newspaper claims that the Gunners are ready to abandon their attempts to sign their former skipper.
Manager Arsene Wenger had previously admitted he was considering a shock move for the French midfielder, but that is now looking increasing unlikely.
Indeed, the newspaper claims that Wenger is losing interest in Vieira and will instead ask both Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie to “step up as leaders in the dressing room and in big games rather than turn to the 33-year-old former captain”.
Vieira’s leadership abilities appear to have attracted Wenger to a move for his former player, despite the midfielder’s advancing years.
Defender Kolo Toure - now at Manchester City - recently criticised the club for lacking leaders on the pitch and insisted that selling strong characters, such as Vieira, was the reason for their lack of success in recent years.
However, the report goes on to say that whilst the club may not be signing Vieira, they are expected to secure long-time transfer target Marouane Chamakh before the transfer window closes.
Although Arsenal are believed to be unwilling to match Bordeaux’s valuation of the striker, it is claimed that the deal will go through even if it takes until transfer deadline day.
