Arsene Wenger Thinks Criticism Of Arsenal's Last Season Is Excessive
The Gunners' boss believes last season was far from a disaster...
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has defended his teams performance last season, despite finishing fourth in the league.
“At Arsenal, what is acceptable is to win the championship and the Champions League because anything else is looked upon as a disaster.” he told The Sun.
“In 2007 we were very close to winning the championship and last year we were in the semi-finals of the Champions League - and it was looked at as a disaster.”
Wenger revealed a confrontation he had with a fan over the matter.
“A guy who has
been supporting Arsenal for 50 years said to me 'We had a disaster
last year' and I said to him 'How many times have we been in the
semi-finals of the Champions League?'" he added.
“If you look at
our results overall last year it wasn't as disastrous as people think
it was."
The Arsenal manager admitted he was far from happy with the club's trophy drought but wants to keep things in perspective.
“Of course, not
winning a trophy hurts but the overall assessment of the season has
been highly negative because we haven't won one since 2005," he concluded.
