Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish has confirmed his interest in Sporting Gijon midfielder Michel after he was spotted next to the Spaniard's agent in the crowd during a pre-season friendly in the Basque country.

Further progress could be made this weekend on the proposed deal as Birmingham entertain Gijon at St.Andrews in a friendly, when more talks are expected to take place.

"I’ve watched the guy, I don’t think that’s any secret. My identity was exposed in Spain the other night," McLeish told The Birmingham Mail.

"We’ve had Michel and a number of other players under scrutiny over the summer but there is nothing cast in stone with anybody yet."

The Blues boss also re-iterated that Michel was not the only player interesting him on the eve of the new Premier League season.

"He’s a decent player. But, as I said, there are others on the radar. It’s not cut and dried the board will give me money for that.

"But I certainly feel that we do need an injection of players for certain positions, midfield being one of them."
