Liverpool & Real Madrid Both Interested In Standard Liege's Steven Defour - Agent

The Reds have added another continental gem to their list of candidates to step in should their Basque pass-master leave...

Steven Defour, Standard Luik
Liverpool are now tracking Steven Defour as a potential replacement for Xabi Alonso, according to the Standard Liege midfielder's agent.

The latter player appears increasingly likely to join Real Madrid this summer, and Rafael Benitez is eager to groom a successor to the Kop favourite.

The Merseyside giants are reportedly close to securing a deal for Alberto Aquilani, the Roma playmaker, with The Sun suggesting that a €23.5 million will go through if and when Alonso officially exits Anfield.

However, that tabloid's rival newspaper, The Daily Mail, is of the understanding that Benitez is still in the process of drafting up a shortlist, and that Defour's name has been pencilled in.

The Belgian youngster, intriguingly, is also understood to be one of Madrid's fallback options in the event that their negotiations for Alonso should ultimately prove fruitless.

And Defour's agent, Paul Stefani, has told the press, "Steven's name has been mentioned not only at Real Madrid, but also at Liverpool - they are looking at him too.

"Normally he would stay for another year, but nobody could say no to clubs like those - and Liege would not stand in his way."
