Arsenal Recruit Thomas Vermaelen Leaves Good Impression On Bacary Sagna

The former Ajax stopper is making a good impression at N5...

There were numerous question marks over Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger's decision to secure the underwhelming recruitment of Belgian stopper Thomas Vermaelen, bought from Ajax for an estimated €12 million (£10.5m), yet consistent right-back Bacary Sagna is impressed with what he has seen from the 23-year-old thus far.

The French international has hailed Vermaelen, and has informed the club's official website that he is "happy" to see versatile defender in the side.

"He is very good," Sagna explained.

"He has a good left foot, he is a good passer and I am happy to see him in the team."

With the £15m departure of Kolo Toure to Manchester City expected to be finalised over the coming days, it is widely believed that Vermaelen is regarded as a starter for the new season.

His skills could compliment the organisational attributes of pacey centre-back William Gallas, as Vermaelen is a good headerer of the ball and is an astute man-marker. He also displayed good physical strength while competing in the Eredivisie.
