Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has insisted that before moving to Manchester City, Emmanuel Adebayor was desperate for a transfer to Old Trafford or Chelsea.

The Togo international swapped the Emirates for Eastlands recently in a deal worth around £25 million, yet according to Sir Alex, City was not his preferred destination.

The United boss went on to add that, in his mind, there was only reason why the striker would chose to move to the Sky Blues.

“At the last minute, I know Adebayor or his agent phoned us after he had agreed a deal with City - then he did the same to Chelsea,” he told the Sunday Mirror.

“You ask why is he going to Manchester City and it can only be for one reason. He was desperate to get to Chelsea and us.”

The Scot also took time out to speak about his squad, and hinted that Carlos Tevez’s departure would not be a bad thing for the club.

“I won't have to deal with some players who are miserable because they are not playing,” he added.

“I have good professionals here so I don't have to worry about that now.”
