Steve Sidwell scored in Aston Villa's opening pre-season game at Peterborough United this week, won 3-0 by the West Midlanders, and the former Chelsea and Reading midfielder is keen to bag a few more goals once the serious business of the Premier League resumes in August.

"I was pleased to get on the scoresheet but it's all about fitness at the moment," he told the club's official website.

"It's all about getting in position to score goals - not just that but to set others up as well.

"You get that feel back for it and by the time the season starts if selected in the starting eleven I can show that on the big stage."

Sidwell is taking nothing for granted as far as his place in the Villa first team goes though, and is looking forward to battling for his place in the side, with the competition hopefully having a positive effect on the squad's performances.

"But everyone's shirt is up for grabs and there is healthy competition and that's what you need," he concluded.
