Steve Bruce is about to enter his rookie year as Sunderland manager and is still harbouring hopes of significantly bolstering his squad ahead of the coming campaign with a number of major transfer coups.

Bordeaux striker Marouane Chamakh remains a priority, but the Morocco international has also attracted a plethora of Premier League clubs including Blackburn Rovers, Fulham, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur.

Bruce was coy regarding any potential deal for the player, and is quoted by Sky Sports as saying, "We have had an interest in the player but, like several players we just have to wait and see what happens."

Chamakh was a key player during Bordeaux's successful Ligue 1 winning side, and scored 13 goals in 34 league appearances. He has struck 15 times on the international stage.

Bruce is also keeping tabs on developments at Manchester City. Should the Eastlands revolution continue with the recruitment of high-profile defenders such as Chelsea leader John Terry, Arsenal's Ivorian international Kolo Toure, or Everton centre back Joleon Lescott, then the Sunderland manager may swoop for Richard Dunne.
