Liverpool Could Intensify Quest For David Silva After Xabi Alonso Deadline Passes
There could be imminent business involving Liverpool and both Real Madrid and Valencia...
And the newspaper - in its online edition - suggests that the Merseyside Reds will be more conducive to letting Alonso leave for Madrid now that a significant deadline is about to pass.
Apparently Real Sociedad, who sold Alonso to Liverpool for £10.5 million, were in line to receive 20 per cent of any transfer fee under the terms of that August 2004 transfer. But that agreement is due to expire on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Spanish international midfielder Alonso is not expected to travel with the rest of Rafa Benitez's squad on their pre-season tour to Asia this weekend.
There is speculation that Wesley Sneijder, Real’s attacking midfielder, could be used as a bargaining chip in the possible transfer of Alonso to Madrid.
As for Silva, he has stated a preference to remain in Spain, but Benitez, a former Valencia manager, has long been an admirer, and should Alonso depart, he will no doubt intensify his efforts to lure the playmaker to Anfield.
