thumbnail Hello,

Interest from Italy continues, according to reports...

Tottenham Hotspur defender Gareth Bale has emerged as a surprise target for Italian club Roma.

Reports in the Italian press had previously suggested AC Milan may turn their attentions to the 19-year-old left-back, should they fail in their attempts to sign Aly Cissokho.

But the Daily Mirror believes it is Roma, who finished sixth in the league last season, and not the Rossoneri, who are planning on taking the Welsh defender on loan for a year, to compete with John Arne Riise.

Bale made 30 appearances in all competitions for Spurs last season, as French full-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto was preferred for large spells of the 2008-09 campaign.

He arrived at White Hart Lane from Southampton in 2007 as a highly rated 17-year-old, though injuries have hampered his fast-track into the first team.

Bale also holds the dubious honour of having never won a Premier League game he has started in.

Birmingham City are also said to be interested in taking the defender on loan for the upcoming season.
