Bobby Charlton feels that the loss of some big name players during the summer transfer window could have caused problems for Manchester United, but the England World Cup winner feels that the shrewdness that characterises transfer dealings at Old Trafford will save the club.
The signing of Michael Owen in particular is an acquisition that Charlton feels, with careful management of the player, could prove to be highly influential.
"When you lose players like Cristiano Ronaldo and [Carlos] Tevez -they're forwards, they're goalscorers - that creates a problem," he told Sky Sports News. "But if Michael Owen plays well, then [it's less of a problem].
"He's 29, he's got a lot of time ahead of him. But he's had a lot of injuries in his time and we have to really be very careful, but the signs look pretty good.
"It looks as though at the end of the day we've made a really good decision."
Many observers have felt that the Red Devils must act quickly to redress the balance of things in the transfer market, especially with the £80 million received from the sale of Ronaldo to Real Madrid burning a hole in their metaphorical back pockets. Charlton, though, thinks that undue haste would be the enemy of progress in this summer's dealings.
"I think that everybody assumes that because we have a lot of money in the bank that we'll spend it hastily - we won't do that," he added.
"The club has always been fairly frugal, and we try to do our homework before we actually spend a lot of money on players.
"But if a good player comes along we are in the race like everyone else."
