Liverpool Manager Rafa Benitez Slams 'Greedy' Gareth Barry For Joining Manchester City
According to the Reds boss, money was the sole motivational factor in the midfielder's decision to join the Citizens...
Rafael Benitez has launched an attack on Gareth Barry, calling him greedy for choosing to move to Manchester City.
After being extensively linked with Liverpool, Barry decided to join City instead, where he will reportedly earn at least £30,000 a week more than he would have at Anfield.
As far as Benitez is concerned, the reason for Barry's decision is clear. Speaking to The Guardian, he said, "Maybe it's just me but in this market, the top level, I don't think money is the most important thing.
"At this level everyone earns big money. The question is do you make the right decisions and do what is best for your career?
"If it's just for money sometimes you will make mistakes and I've been surprised by some decisions this summer – like Barry. I won't say too much but it was clearly 100 per cent for money.
"The most important thing for me, though, is the passion of the players."
Barry joined City in a £12 million move from Aston Villa, and will earn around £130,000 a week.
