Peter Lovenkrands may remain in the north east for another season, but it will not be in the colours of Newcastle United after he was notified by the Magpies that he is surplus to requirements at St. James’ Park.

According to The Evening Chronicle, Lovenkrands received a letter last week informing him that he should look for another club rather than turn up to the first day of pre-season training.

A source close to Lovenkrands also told the north east paper, "Peter was keen to stay on and help fight for the cause. He is devastated and upset by this.

"Despite the pain of relegation, he wanted to talk about a new deal and put some wrongs right from last season."

Lovenkrands, who has been released along with Michael Owen, Mark Viduka and Claudio Cacapa, is hoping to remain in England, but will not be joining Sunderland.

Instead, The Evening Chronicle reports that West Ham United and Wigan Athletic are chasing the 29-year-old. Unlike the out-of-contract David Edgar, who has moved to Burnley, no compensation fee will be paid to Newcastle due to Lovenkrands' age.

Capable of playing up front or on the left wing, Lovenkrands made himself popular with the Newcastle faithful last year due to his hard-working and honest performances.

"You would have thought that was the sort of player Newcastle needed this season, but clearly they have other ideas," the source concluded.
