£500,000 will be paid initially, while the remaining £2.5m will be paid in instalments. The fee is almost double Cardiff's previous club record of £1.7m for Peter Thorne in 2001.
Chopra is very familiar with Cardiff City, having had two spells on loan at Ninian Park last season as well as a permanent spell at the club in 2006/07. The former Newcastle United man failed to establish himself at the Stadium of Light, with goals coming at a premium for the Black Cats.
Although the move marks a loss on Roy Keane's outlay of £5m for Chopra in 2007, Steve Bruce is continuing to offload the deadwood in his squad as he looks to bring in other strikers.
