Egyptian striker Amr Zaki is desperate to return to Wigan Athletic, following the end of his loan spell.

Zaki was initially a hit at the JJB stadium due to his goal-scoring prowess, but his relationship with the club soon grew sour due to repeated disciplinary infractions, including failing to return to the club on time after international duty.

As a result, manager Steve Bruce decided not to exercise the purchase option, sending Zaki back to Zamalek.

However, Bruce has since moved on to Sunderland, with Roberto Martinez entering the hot seat in Greater Manchester. As a result, Zaki believes he still has a chance of returning.

Speaking to the Wigan Observer, he said, "I really wanted to stay with the Latics - and I still do.

"I hear Martinez is a very talented coach who is still young and close to the players' age, which will help him get the best out of them. But this depends on the Latics board, who should make an official offer for Zamalek to sign me.

"Without a doubt, Wigan was a great experience for me, and I enjoyed every second of the time I spent with Latics in the Premier League."

In Zaki's favour is the fact that Wigan are considerably short in the striking department. However, the club would not have forgotten his past indiscretions, and it remains to be seen whether they are willing to forgive and forget.
